What is stress? Its usual definition is that it's a situation in which the demands made on a person exceed that person's ability to cope.
There is a strong, proven link between the effects of stress on health and, in the UK alone, over 100 million work days are lost every year due to stress. This is clearly a costly statistic in terms of money and lost productivity but, perhaps even more important is the fact that so many people are made ill on a daily basis by something that could be avoided by using particular strategies.
A little pressure is not a bad thing but, in situations where there is constant pressure, most human beings become stressed. This causes a racing heart, high blood pressure, headache and sweating.
Not surprisingly, all of these physical symptoms drastically reduce our ability to make reasonable and balanced decisions, rather similar to a person who has been consuming alcohol or drugs. Clearly, if the decisions we are making are not reasonable then they must be unreasonable!
We stop thinking about how what we are doing affects others and think only about how WE are affected; our natural unselfishness disappears and we don't care about anyone else.
Most people would agree that driving can be a very stressful experience that can sometimes cause anger and abnormal behaviour. Imagine the work environment for someone who is inside a vehicle, driving on our roads for hours, day after day! In this situation you couldn't fail to be annoyed by the actions or inactions of other road users and their affect on you. Or could you?
We have all heard of 'Road Rage' and this could be anything from feeling a little irritated by someone to feeling that you could cheerfully kill them because you are so furious. This means that you are no longer in control and this is stressful.
You need to remember that sometimes people can simply make a mistake. Nobody is perfect and that includes you!
Our course shows you a different way to think; a change of attitude that really is a psychological way to approach driving - no matter how long you have to spend on the road.
